Edward Gardens

This month as a class will be visiting Edward Gardens. It is a beautiful park filled with over 1000 different flowers and pants. There are many activities for people to get involved in. Such as, trails for walking, running and bike riding. You can spend an entire day at the park while enjoying a picnic and a BBQ. Let's not forget what put Edward Gardens on the map, its botanical gardens.

Since we are learning about plants and soil in class what better way to experience them then to go to Edward Gardens!!!

Different Types of Soil

Hello Boys & Girls,

We will be looking at the different types of soil in class this week and getting a clear understanding of the composition of soils, the types of soils, and the relationship between soils and other living things. In order to have healthy plants the soil needs to have many nutrients!

HUMUS

A dark-brown or black organic substance made up of decayed plant or animal matter.

CLAY

Soil is formed from very fine particles, such as silicates of aluminum, iron and magnesium. Clay soil prevents the flow of water, meaning it absorbs water slowly and then stores it for a long time.

SAND SOIL

Sandy soil has large particles that drain quickly but is unable to hold nutrients properly.

Growing our own plants

Hello Class,

Since we have been learning about the cycle of plants why not test it out ourselves!! Tomorrow in class we will be planting our own plants. Remember to bring a plastic container from home, you will need it when planting your seed.

First each student will decorate the outside of their container with different color paper. Once the containers have been all nicely decorated I will call students in groups to plant their seed.

This could be a perfect Mother's Day gift!!

The Plant Life Cycle

THE SEED- A plant begins as a simple seed.

When the seed is planted in the ground with soil it will begin to grow. Tiny roots will work its way down and a stem will begin to form upwards towards the surface.

THE SEEDING- The seed will look small and fragile. So be careful not to touch it because it may break! With sunlight and water, the seed will begin to grow bigger and stronger. The stem and root will grow longer, and new leaves will begin to appear.

PLANT- Once the plant is full grown, little buds or flowers will begin to form. After the proper care your seed will turn into a big plant.

Once the plant starts to have flowers little tomatoes will begin to form. Once they are full grow they can be ready to pick and eat!

Welcome Back!!!

Hello Grade 3 Students!!

My name is Ms. Piluso and I will be your teacher for this school year. I have put together this blog in order to keep you posted with upcoming events and to provide information in order to help each and everyone one of you succeed. I will be putting up some websites that will help with topics that will be covered this year feel free to take a look at them and use them if needed.
